Pray Like This
Over the next few weeks, I would like to explore some options for having a personal "quiet time". Quiet time is just a churchy word for spending time with God. It usually involves praying, learning His Word, maybe listening to worship music or even writing notes of praise to God. I would guess it became known as a quiet time, because its ideal if you can get alone somewhere in a quiet place so you can focus on God and not anything else. If you're anything like me this is a good thing to do because I can become very distracted by the chores of the day, the kids, THE PHONE...!
For prayer, here are some examples of things I've liked to do over the years.
This first idea was given to me by a friend many years ago. I took a recipe box with index cards and dividers. It’s divided into prayers that I want to pray daily, weekly, monthly(numbered), and answered prayers. This was great for me because I forget things very easily. When someone would ask me to pray for them, I would write it down on an index card and place it in the box. Every day when I would sit down to pray I would pull out my prayer box and pray over the cards for that day. It also helped remind me of the prayers God was answering because I was looking back over each card often. God is so good and our faith is built when we truly take the time to see how He's working in our lives and answering our prayers. Even when the answers aren't what we wanted, it’s comforting to know that He hears and that He's answering!
This year a sweet friend gave me this prayer journal and I love it! You can find it at ValerieMariePaper.com or TJ Maxx. The first section is organized by month and has specific things to pray over, like family, friends, goals for the month, problems... The next section is blank journal
paper so you can pour your heart out to the Lord. And the last section focuses on gratitude. Again, I like it because I can look back and see the prayers I have prayed all month.
The last thing I will share today is a Bible study called Pray Like This. It has completely changed the way I pray, and the way I think about prayer! Why? Because it’s a study on a prayer straight from Jesus. In Matthew 6:9 Jesus says: “This is how you should pray.” I don't know about you, but I want so much to be more like Jesus in everything I do, so if He's given me a blueprint, I want to follow it! Each day has a Bible passage to read and then a short question and answer page that walks you through your own prayer life. I highly recommend it!
I will leave you today with a couple of Bible verses that speak to the importance of our prayers to our Heavenly Father (click each link to see the verse):
Audra and her husband Jordan are called to ministry and he is the senior pastor at their church. They have two beautiful children who bring them tons of joy, lots of laughs, and on occasion new grey hair. She is a former teacher who still loves to teach, enjoys cooking and baking, and has a passion to lead other women to know Jesus and live out their faith in Him.
