You know what makes me sad? Seeing friends I love on social media feeling as if their identity depends on the affirmation of people on the other side of a screen. It makes me sad because, I have been there! I have looked to others for approval and it has always ended in disappointment.
I see it every day and I know you do too! Maybe you are that person. Maybe, if you were honest, you would say that you allow others to dictate your worth, whether it be about food, working out, marriage, parenting, the list could go on.
But as I have matured in my relationship with the Lord, He has taught me some important things. As I get to know Him deeper, I have begun to truly believe who I am in Christ, and that's when others can see a change in me from the outside and the way I live my life. I have begun to shift my focus from others to the audience of One, who created me and knows me better than I know myself.
I love this quote from one of my Pastor's sermons...
“If we’re not devoted to the Word of God, we’ll be dependent on the words of man.”
Please hear me when I say this…it’s not enough for us to seek guidance and answers from those around us, if we are not deeply rooted in God’s Holy Word. Without saturating our hearts and mind with the spoken words of God, we will allow Satan to creep in from the opinions of others.
Who I am is dependent on what God says about me...NOT MAN! He has some beautiful promises in His Word! Here is what I want you to know…
Romans 5:8 - God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
John 3:1 - See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Solomon 4:7 - You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.
1 Samuel 16:7 - But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
1 Corinthians 6:20 - You are not your own, for you were bought with a price
If you don't take anything else away from this post, please remember...NOTHING ELSE MATTERS! Not the latest diet, the hottest workout, the nicest car, the biggest house and sure not the opinions of others...NOTHING ELSE!
Let God be the first one we run to in prayer when we need affirmation and answers!
“For am I now trying to win the favor of people, or God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
